FoA needs your help to stop NY’s animal killing contests

March 13, 2017 | hunting competition / Squirrel Slam

In February, the college town of Brockport, N.Y., located on the Erie Canal about 20 miles west of Rochester, became the scene of a bloody massacre, where hunters gunned down squirrels with rifles and high powered pellet guns to for the “Squirrel Slam,” a nasty event Friends of Animals has been railing against for several years.

The former host, the Holley Fire Department, declined to have the “fundraiser” this year because the department is the subject of a lawsuit filed by Lauren Sheive, a squirrel aficionado who says there has not been a proper review of the event’s environmental effect. Instead the Elks Lodge took over the gruesome event.

As litigation continues, FoA is adamant that the best way to ensure this and other horrific “contests” like it don’t occur in the state of New York is to contact your state assembly members and senators and tell them to co-sponsor A04116, sponsored by Assembly Member Deborah Glick. The legislation, which provides that it shall be unlawful for any person to organize, conduct, promote or participate in any contest or competition where the objective of such contest or competition is to take the greatest number of wildlife, was referred to the Environmental Conservation Committee in February.

We know there are more non-hunters in New York than hunters, and we need you to make your voices heard.

It is 2017! These bans are long overdue!
